Paddy Willis RIP

It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of Paddy Willis, a long-time member of the club and former President. Paddy’s senior career stretched from 1959 – 1976, and in all he played 102 matches for Merrion, taking a total of 148 wickets. He was also part of Merrion’s 1960 Leinster Senior Cup winning side. He won a second Leinster Senior Cup in 1961 playing for Trinity.

Although perhaps only a few will remember him opening the bowling with Denis Noble back in the 60s and early 70s, many will have benefitted from his coaching. Paddy helped set up the youth section in Merrion and was actively involved in developing young cricketers in the club.  His sons Richard and Robin both played senior cricket for Merrion.

Some final words from his friends in Merrion.

‘So sorry to hear of the death of one of @MerrionCC’s great family contributors, supporter and all-round much-loved member, Paddy Willis. A gentleman, a competitor and a man who will be much missed’.  Liam Casey, President

‘Paddy was a Merrion legend and always so good to the young players like me at the time . A pleasure and a privilege to have played on the same team as him . And afterwards to have played on the same team as his fine sons’   Kevin Allwright

With condolences to his family and friends. The Funeral Service takes place on Thursday, (February 22nd), at 11:30 am in St. Paul’s Church, Glenageary, Family flowers only please. Donations, if desired, to Dublin Simon Community.
