At the recent Autumn General Meeting the position of captain of the Open Competitions 1st XI captain was left open, and accordingly, fell to the management committee to appoint in line with the club rules. It is with great pleasure that the committee can now announce that Max Sorensen has been appointed. Max is a former Irish international and joined Merrion in 2019 from The Hills. Since then he has played 83 times for the club and has picked up 96 wickets while also scoring 1,031 runs, while also being a key part of the league and cup double-winning side of 2021. In his time at the club, Max has also provided expert strength and conditioning training to the men’s senior squad and has been at the heart of the club’s social scene since his arrival.
The announcement of Max’s appointment also marks the departure of 2024 captain, Sam Harbinson, who will not be returning to the club for the 2025 season. The committee would like to take this opportunity to express its gratitude to Sam for all he did for the club. Sam first joined the club as the overseas player in 2023, and returned to captain in 2024, as an Irish passport holder, when he led the team to the final of the Irish Senior Cup and a strong 2nd place finish in the Cricket Leinster Premier League. The impact Sam had on the club will be a lasting one, he will always be welcome back at Anglesea Road and we thank him for all his efforts. We wish Sam and his partner Maddie, who also played for the club in 2024, all the best in the future.
Following his appointment, Max Sorensen has said the following,
“I am really excited and honoured to lead the team in the coming season, I am confident that we have the talent amongst our group to bring some silverware to Merrion next year.”
“My strategy is simple “no excuses, just results,” if we work hard and focus on our strengths and the efforts we have put in, the results will take care of themselves!”
The management committee of the club would like to formally welcome Max to the role and wish him all the best, and every success ahead of the 2025 season, as the squad look to build on a strong 2024 season.
