It was a season of near misses for Merrion’s Open Competition teams. Three teams, the 1st XI, 2nd XI and 7th XI, came runners up in their various leagues. The only team to bring home a trophy was the 2nd XI which won the Leinster Senior II Cup. The league positions of the Merrion teams are set out in the table below.
End Season League Tyables
Competition | Position | Rank | Teams
1st XI | Premier League | 2nd | 2 | 7 |
2nd XI | Premier 2nd XI | 2nd | 17 | 8 |
3rd XI | Division 4 | 6th | 29 | 7 |
4th XI | Division 7 | 4th | 50 | 8 |
5th XI | Division 11 | 8th | 79 | 8 |
6th XI | Division 14 | 5th | 107 | 8 |
7th XI | Division 20 | 2nd | 153 | 7 |
The challenge facing many Merrion teams is that they often find themselves playing in competitions against higher level teams from other clubs. Indeed the 3rd – 6th Xis all end the season as the highest ranked team when compared to equivalent teams in other clubs. It is perhaps only a small consolation but Merrion remains the strongest club overall across the 21 Divisions and 166 teams in the Open Competitions.
