The End of an Era : John Anderson [2008 – 2026]

The 12^th of September marked the end of an era for Merrion, it was John Anderson’s last game for the 1^st XI. In the period since he first arrived in 2008 he has been ever present at or close to the top of the batting averages for the club. In this post we will focus on his time in Merrion.

When John Anderson joined the club in 2008 the 1^st XI had suffered something of a dip in fortunes since around the turn of the century when a Brad Spanner inspired team won the Senior League [2001], the League Cup [1999]  and three T20 [Alan Murray] competitions in 1999, 2001 and 2002. Apart from a solitary T20 title in 2005 and the League Cup in 2007, the promise of the earlier years had faded. Indeed Merrion had been relegated from the Premier League in 2003 and did not get back to the top level again until 2007.

John’s arrival served as a catalyst for perhaps the most productive period for the club in Senior Competitions.  Since 2008, Merrion has been part of the Premier League every year except 2017. A consistency not bettered by any other club in the province. This period also saw two Premier League titles [2018 / 2021], the Leinster Senior Cup [2011] another T20 trophy [2021] and the Championship [2017] during the club’s one year in the second division. Perhaps most memorable were the victories in the Irish Senior Cup in 2010 and 2016.

Throughout all of this John was Merrion’s most consistent performer with the bat and for a period as an all-rounder with his leg-breaks.

John’s last innings was against Malahide in the final match of the 2026 season. In all he played 253 times for Merrion in Leinster Senior Competitions. To these can be added 52 Irish Senior Cup matches and  over 60 T20 games. He was the most prolific bat of his generation in both Leinster and Irish club competitions and a more than useful contributors with the ball and in the field. His record speaks for itself.

In terms of Merrion records, he has scored the highest aggregate runs in Leinster Senior Competitions [League, League Cup and Cup] just ahead of Simon Curley, and including the Irish Senior Cup, the most by any Merrion bat in its 100 years competing in Senior Competitions. Although not all early records are extant for the Alan Murray T20 competition we can say with confidence that he also tops the AM aggregate runs table. His 185 in 2016 against Malahide at Anglesea Road is the fourth highest individual score for Merrion in a senior match.

He was one of seven players to accumulate over 10,000 all-rounder points for the club.

Finally, John is the only Merrion player to join a small elite group who have scored more than 10,000 Leinster Senior runs [the balance scored for Railway Union when he first came to Ireland]. By the end of his career he had risen to 9^th overall with the third highest overall average.

Records of course only tell part of the story. Always a very correct and stylish batter, he maintained this elegance even as he adjusted his technique to the requirements of the modern game with an array of reverse sweeps, ramps and scoops. For Merrion’s hard bitten supporters, inured to disappointment, as long as John was still batting we knew we were still in with a chance of victory.
