Merrion teams well placed for final run in

As we rapidly approach the end of the league season Merrion Open teams are competing for places in finals. With a great number of re-fixes to take place over the next two weeks, fortunes are at least in part down to the weather and the uncertainties of the T20 format.

The 1st XI are lying in 3rd place from only two games played. The results from the three games this week – refixes in Anglesea Road on Tuesday and in The Hills on Thursday and Malahide at home on Saturday – will determine how the season ends. Still everything to play for.

The 2nd XI are also lying in third place but have lost two games from five. As these defeats were against the two top teams in the league, Clontarf 2ndXI and YMCA 2nd XI, any chance of getting to the final will depend on other teams doing us a favour. But still an outside chance.

With only two games played, the 3rd XI’s season can go either way. Currently lying fifth in the table they need a late run and enough matches refixed to make this possible.

The 4th and 5th XI are both leading their divisions with five games played each. Their results are almost identical, four wins out of five and similar bonus points. The 4th XI still have difficult games ahead against Tyrrelstown and Civil Service 3s, the teams lying second and third respectively. The 4ths will likely need to win one of their remaining two games to progress.

The 5th XI have a little more distance from the chasing pack but most of these have games in hand. As things stand four teams have only lost one game each, Merrion 5, Tyrrelstown 3, Clontarf 6 and Malahide 5.  So still plenty of competition for places in the finals. Merrion’s run in is against Knockharley 3 and North County 5.
