Last weekend saw Robbie Stanton make an undefeated century for the 5th XI against Adamstown 4th XI. While records in this matter are somewhat hazy, a century in one’s 60th year may make Robbie the oldest centurion in Merrion’s history. As no detailed records exist outside of Senior [1st XI] cricket we have to rely on folk memory. As matters stand we will take this to be the record until someone comes up with a better claim or until Bob scores another century.
One record that Robbie holds that is unlikely ever to be overtaken is for the most appearances for the 1st XI in Senior League and Cup games. In a career from 1979 – 1994 he turned out 394 times. Although Dom Joyce is still in the hunt with 319 games, the impact of the Covid years has dented his chances of ever catching Bob.
