Three Merrion teams make it through to Semi-Finals.

Three Merrion teams have made it through to the Open Competitions – T20 Semi-Finals. The games take place this weekend and are as follows.

2nd XI v Pembroke 2 away [Sydney parade] on Sunday at 15.00

3rd XI v Clontarf 3 away [Castle avenue]on Saturday at 14.00

4th XI v The Hills 2 home [Anglesea Rd on Saturday at 14.00

Merrion 2nds had a nervous time on Sunday even after they had accounted from Malahide 2s as they still needed YMCA 2nds to beat Longford. As it turned out YMCA were much the better team on the day and won easily.

With YMCA 2s beating Longford, it was up to Merrion 2s to win against Malahide 2 to secure place in the SFs. A solid bowling performance saw Malahide bowled out for 67 [four wicket each for James Hitchcock and Hugh Kennedy] and Merrion 2s duly achieved the target for the loss of five wickets.

Pembroke got through their series of matches with 5 wins in seven games, and topped the table on foot of winning the head-to-head against Knockharley. Merrion had the same win/loss ratio [five out of seven].

In the four section Middle Cup, Merrion 3rds came through by winning four out of six games with one called off. This earns them a home draw against Clontarf 3s who came through their section also with four wins out of six. The 3rds have the added incentive of knowing that if they win against Clontarf the final will be at Anglesea Road.

The Hills 2nds won four games with one called off out of six to get through their section of the YMCA Salver. They play Merrion’s 4th XI who went one better in winning five games out of six. They too have the opportunity of a home final if they win.

Of the two teams that did not make it to the semi-finals, the 1st XI will be disappointed that after a good start to the season they squandered a strong position against Pembroke and failed to defend a competitive total in Rush. Two losses meant that they were third in their section.

The 5th XI were second in their four team section, but well behind the leaders Castleknock 2s who comfortably topped the table. Two ‘No Result’ matches did not help.

One more game to mention is the Boys Junior B team who are also through to a final which takes place in Merrion on Saturday at 10.00.

For those of you who tuned into the live streaming and very entertaining commentary last weekend – hopefully we will have some more of the same for the remaining two weeks of the season.
