Mixed Results for 2025 Season [Open / Women]

With the final matches completed, we can see how Merrion teams fared in league competitions during the 2025 season. As is clear from the tables below it was a year of mixed fortunes, with the Open Competitions section suffering its worth overall results for many years. Four of the six teams ended up in relegation. This was only partly redeemed by an excellent performance by the 2nd XI to win the Second XI Premier League.

In defence it could be said that the teams from the 3rd XI down were in Divisions where they were up against teams higher up in their various clubs.  Indeed the end year position of Merrion teams across the whole of the Open Competitions made Merrion the highest ranked club for clubs with 3 / 4 / 5 or 6 teams*. While this points to the strength in depth of the club it means that the lower teams in Merrion will regularly face an uphill struggle in their respective leagues. We will probably get a better sense of how strong the club is overall next year with four teams playing in lower leagues.

And what of the 1st XI. It achieved its first objective for the season, which was to qualify for the top section of the Premier League and thus avoid any danger of relegation. Having managed this, however, it did not move from its mid-season position of 5th in the table. The real concern is perhaps that the team failed to beat any of the clubs ranked higher in the Premier League in any form of competition. Bridging this gap must be the top priority for next year.

Title Team M W L T NR Rank Open
Position
Premier League 1st XI 16 5 7 0 5 5/12 5
Second XI Premier League 2nd XI 14 11 3 0 0 1/8 18
Division 4 3rd XI 14 6 7 0 1 7/8 32
Division 6 4th XI 14 3 8 1 2 7/8 48
Division 12 5th XI 13 2 10 0 1 8/8 97
Division 14 6th XI 14 3 9 1 1 7/8 112

Finally, Merrion failed to make any impression in the various T20 and Cup competitions.

The Womens Section had perhaps its best season ever in 2025. Not only did the Women’s 1st XI win the treble, Leinster Senior League and Cup and Irish Cup, but the 2nd XI and the 3rd XI also won their leagues. Well done to all.

With promotion of the 3rd XI to the Third Division this will put Merrion in a good position to challenge Pembroke for the informal position of strongest overall club in the league.
