Brockway played only 4 games in 1942. Not much is known about him. Derek Scott had his stats available, and Jimmy McAlinden mentioned his name at a fractious committee meeting, where I managed to persuade enough people that we needed a professinal to improve the standard of cricket on the 1st eleven. Simon Curley was wholeheartedly against the idea, as were several others. Unfortunately, I took Derek Scott’s advice, and went for the more experienced man. It’s hard to maintain discipline in a changing room with a pro who farts continuously before asking ‘Ball, please’ in a foreign accent. After four years the LCU banned pros for almost a decade, thereby holding up the development of Irish cricket by that amount of time.
